Spring Break was wonderful and now I feel refreshed and ready to finish out the semester with a bang. In fact, I felt so revived that I stopped procrastinating on my Business Law paper and actually started it. The amazing thing is I finished it too, so now I have that out of the way! As you know already, my sister came to visit me for Spring Break and we had a good time. She even got to go to some of my classes with me and I’ll let her tell you about her experience…

Hello! I am Kaleigh’s sister, Katelyn, and I visited during her spring break. Kaleigh told me that the ERAU campus was small, but I was still surprised at how small it actually is. I think that there are many benefits to a campus of that size. For one, you are close to all of the buildings and would be able to get to class on time very easily. I went to two of my sister’s classes with her. International Business was interesting and the class size was small. The teacher knew everyone by name and most everyone participated in the class discussion. Since it was Friday, Kaleigh was dressed in her Air Force uniform and I got to watch her being inspected. She had to stand at attention while other cadets looked over her uniform and her shoes. She passed inspection. I am glad I was able to sit in on her Air Force class. Five cadets gave a briefing on planes and the history of the Gulf War. It was a really professional type of class and atmosphere.

Of course, we also went to the beach while I was in Daytona. It was really pretty, but there were a lot of seagulls. We went to Daytona Lagoon and raced go-carts, played miniature golf, and laser tag. I got to sample chocolate at Angell & Phelps Chocolate Factory on Beach Street. One of Kaleigh’s friends took us out on his boat on the Intercoastal Waterway. We walked on the boardwalk and went shopping, I discovered a store I really like called Maui Nix. My sister and I love ice cream and we visited Ritter’s Custard and the Dairy Bar. The flea market was huge and had about everything a person could even think about buying.

Overall, I was very impressed with the Daytona Beach Campus. I told my sister I would love going to a school where it was warm and palm trees surrounded me. She does not realize how lucky she is! Everyone I met on campus was really friendly too. I am so glad I was finally able to go and visit my sister!

I really enjoyed having my sister come and visit me! I’m looking forward to the end of the semester when she is going to come back because there are several things we didn’t get to do. Next time, she is going to go to the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse and we are going to play miniature golf at a place called Pirate’s Cove. She really liked the campus and the fact that there are palm trees everywhere!

I was telling you in my last journal entry how the week before Spring Break was Operation Bottoms Up (OBU) Week. Well, my job as Operations Support Squadron Commander kept me pretty busy and I enjoyed the learning experience. My primary job was to execute Lead Lab on Wednesday morning and I was so happy that it went well and everything went according to schedule. Now, I just have a couple weeks left of Field Training Preparation. One big event that is coming up is the QFR (Qualifying Fitness Review) it’s basically another PT test, but the scores follow you to Field Training. I went running everyday over Spring Break with my sister and I plan on continuing that, so hopefully my run time will be really good.

I hope everyone is looking forward to the rest of the school year and summer! I know I sure am. If you have any questions, send me an e-mail. Be sure to take a look at the pictures I posted!

Until next time,
Kaleigh

It’s Spring Break time!!! This is the final few days until we go for Spring Break. I am so excited, I am going back home to be with family and old High School friends for an entire week. It doesn’t sound like much, but when you’re away at college, it makes you appreciate the opportunity to see family, no matter if it’s 3 days or a month. My mom is looking forward to me coming back home, she is so excited; she is taking off from work that day! Even though the excitement for the break is high on campus, we still have classes going on. On Friday before I leave, I have a test in Instrument Pilot Operations, which I think is the hardest one yet! I have been studying long and hard for it and I think I’ll do great.

Outside of classes, we had Greek Week last week. It was a lot of fun. The end of the week, I participated in the Up till Dawn Finale event as a Morale Captain. Up till Dawn is an organization that does fundraising activities, the proceeds of this go to the St. Judes Research Hospital that helps kids with cancer. The event was 12 hours, from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. It was a long night but we had dances, food and a ton of activities. We had trikes and a bounce-a-bout and also a black jack table. We even played Gatorade pong! This week we also had the ERRSA Elections. The elections went very well, and everyone that I wanted to be in office got in. First generation will be having their elections in about two weeks.

We got our lottery numbers this week! Lottery numbers are numbers that housing gives out to students at random and is used when picking your hall for next semester. Once you do a contract, you are eligible to get a number and the range is from 1 to 1300. My number was 662, so it’s not too bad.

This week we also had the Xi-Man competition. The competition is a fundraiser done by the Alpha Xi Delta sorority and it is like a male pageant. Delta Upsilon placed 4th, mainly because of our t-shirt sales which was also a part of the fundraiser.

I know that it’s time that you guys are getting your financial aid letter, or should be getting them. Please be sure that you file your FAFSA for the upcoming school year if you want Federal Aid. It’s never too late to apply so do it when you get the chance to. If you have any questions about it, please feel free to shoot me an email.

I hope you guys are doing great. Thanks to those of you that asked me questions the past few weeks. Keep them coming, if there is any way that I can help you, just ask, I’ll be sure to answer as best as I can and also get you to the right resources. Stay safe!

Hey guys!!!
It has been quite eventful since I last wrote to you all!! Let’s see, starting with e-mails/facebook-ers: There have a been a ton (ok maybe not a ton) but a lot of people contacting me! I hope I am helping you all as much as I think I am!!! Remember, if I don’t help you as much as you wanted or get back to you quickly enough, you can always call admissions.

Last Thursday (this is the best part of my week) I did my first 3 landings ever!!! They were nowhere near as bad as I thought they would be either!! I was going to fly today but the plane is down for its 50 hr. inspection so we will fly tomorrow! Spring break is just a week away!!! However, it seems sooooo far! I just recently got a job in admissions so if you all come for a tour, who knows maybe I will be your tour guide! I am not 100% sure what I am doing for spring break yet, I want to go home but my parents might come visit me for a few days instead so we will see. Either way I am in Daytona until at least Sunday because I have flight team practice Saturday. My friend’s girlfriend is coming in on Thursday and we are going to Disney World on Friday!! That will be VERY fun!! As far as classes are going – test in weather tomorrow and after that nothing much until after spring break. The semester starts to wind down after the break and finals will come up fast!

AH. I am getting a townhouse with two of my roommates that I live with now for summer and next year, that will be awesome!!!! There isn’t much else to tell except I hope you all have great breaks and keep the questions coming!!!!

Warm weather is back! It was so nice all weekend, and I welcomed back the warm weather by sitting on the beach getting sun burned. Although I currently resemble a lobster, I enjoyed every minute of the sun and sand. Daytona has been packed full of visitors this past week for Bike Week and the beginning of Spring Break time. I have never seen the roads and beaches so crowded, and I am certainly glad Bike Week is over.

On Wednesday February 26, Delta Upsilon (DU) had our official colonization ceremony. It is very exciting to be a founding father of such a great organization. When I came to Embry-Riddle, I was almost certain I was not interested in Greek Life. However, the principles and ideals of DU matched with mine. I am very passionate about the four founding principles; the advancement of justice, the promotion of friendship, the diffusion of liberal culture, and the development of character. I am also very excited about DU’s nationwide partnership with the Boys and Girls Club of America. I hope to do a lot of work promoting our values and volunteering in the community.

Last week was Greek Week on campus. Greek Week is a friendly competition between all of the fraternities and sororities at Embry-Riddle. Some of the events included a human pyramid, tug-o-war contest, cardboard boat race, and a chariot race. Although it was our first year, Delta Upsilon did very well overall. We even got FIRST PLACE in the cardboard boat race! I met a lot of the other Greeks this week and got to have fun with my DU brothers.

Classes have been extremely demanding as we approach our break. I took tests in PS142, MA112, and WX201, and did very well. I got A’s on the two tests I have gotten back, and I am confident I did well on the math exam too. Along with these tests, I have been continuing work on my large projects in COM221 and BA201. I am still really enjoying my classes and schedule this semester, and my professors are a lot of fun. Although sometimes it is tough to wake up, I am always thankful to be done with classes in the morning!

Amongst all of the tests and Greek week activities, my grandparents made a visit. I got to eat two meals with them and I showed them around campus. They were very impressed with the facilities and enjoyed their visit. I think they were a little overwhelmed with Bike Week, but we had fun anyway. I will be spending more time with family in the coming weeks, as my mom and sister are heading down to Tampa where I will join them for Spring Break. I am really looking forward to the break and spending time with family and friends.

If you have any questions or want to know anything random, just let me know and I will be glad to answer. You can email me at meansm@erau.edu for ANY questions! Thanks for reading!

Until Next Time,
Mack

March 8th

Hello to all! Daytona is finally rid of all the bikers and I think the dust is ready to settle. This town has been a total zoo for the past week! Bike Week was more than I could have ever imagined, but it was a good time. So after all of the commotion, what comes next? Mid terms! I have been swamped in study sessions and homework problems for the last half of last week and will continue to be under the weight of tests until this Wednesday.

I recently went to Atlanta, Georgia, for a leadership conference called Pike University. This is a convention where Pi Kappa Alpha members and alumni go to learn about different types of leadership and how to recruit people for the fraternity. They also taught various things, such as how to iron a tie, manage finances, and dress properly. I found these particularly insightful because it’s not every day I get the opportunity to be taught things of that nature. I had a great time, and really learned the true meaning of servant leadership. But upon leaving Atlanta, we got caught in a snow blizzard! No joke, a cold front pushed through the southeast last weekend and snow was reported almost to the Florida-Georgia state line. Being a Florida native, I had never driven through snow before so it was an adventure in and of itself.

This past week was Greek Week, which is a campus-wide competition among the fraternities and sororities here at Riddle. Every evening has a different event: one day is tug of war, one is cardboard boat races, one is relay races, etc. We didn’t perform as well as we usually do, but it was still a good time and we still had fun. Friday night was an event called “Up ’til Dawn” which raises money for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. Up ’til Dawn is just that – you stay up from 7pm to 7am and raise money for charity. All of the Pikes attended and we wrote letters to people asking for donations to the hospital and earned a good amount of community service, not to mention helping out the kids at St. Jude’s.

Our pledge class of Pike competes in both basketball and softball in the Riddle intramural league, and I usually come out to all the games and play. We usually lose, but we always have a good time so it’s not a big deal. We have come a long way since we began, so progress is always rewarding.

I recently got a new job on campus as campus tour guide. I really wanted a position in the admissions department, and had been waiting for one to become available for quite some time. I received an email stating four positions had opened up in the admissions department so I went in and scheduled an interview. Apparently, fifty-three other people also had the same idea I had. So many people were competing for so few jobs! But after all was said and done, myself and another Pike received the spots, along with two others. I start this next week, so I am really looking forward to what this position will have to offer.

And guess what next week is? SPRING BREAK! Woo hoo! I am really stoked to head home for a week and see my friends and family. It’s been almost three months since I’ve seen them all. Adjusting to my high school friends being so far away has been the hardest part about college. Anyhow, next time you hear from me, I’ll be in Fort Walton Beach, Florida!

Let me know if you have any questions about Riddle or Pike, and hopefully I can see you all soon when you come for your campus tour! Hello to Andrea and Juan and thanks for all the emails! (See, when you email, you get a shout out!)

See ya,
Josh

March 8, 2009

Hello everyone! I can’t believe it is already March. In less than two months, I graduate from college. That is incredibly hard to believe. I am extremely excited to see what the future brings as I step foot into the real world.

The past few weeks have been extremely exciting and busy at the same time. The first topic of discussion is my weather class. Remember the long weather project I mentioned in my last journal entry? Well, my seven member group and I presented our findings last week to the class. It is amazing just how different weather can be in another country. We studied the Middle East and determined how weather affects aircraft operations. Our presentation was 2 hours long and consisted of 170 power point slides. Whew, that was a long one. But, the good news is that we learned a lot about international weather.

Another exciting thing I experienced over the past few weeks came about when I decided to apply for another internship. I did an internship last summer as many of you may already know. It was the best summer of my life! Because of that fact, I am trying to get one more internship this summer before I step foot into the real world. Last summer, I worked in the safety department at Continental Airlines. This was the first time I have ever worked with safety information. I loved it. Because of this fact, I decided to apply for a paid safety internship with Southwest Airlines this summer. Southwest is based in my home town of Dallas, Texas, therefore this would be a perfect opportunity. I would be able to live at home and still have the time of my life. I am flying to Dallas this Wednesday for an interview, wish me luck!

Finally, I had an extremely awesome week with my flight students. First off, my private pilot student flew by himself last Friday for the first time. This was a truly amazing experience for the both of us. We flew to New Smyrna Airport early Friday morning. When it was time for him to solo, I went up into the control tower and watched my student fly an airplane completely by himself. I was extremely proud of him! Taking a student from not knowing anything about flying, to flying an airplane completely by himself is the best feeling in the world. Secondly, yesterday, my instrument student passed his checkride on his first try! He was a Korean student I have been working with since the beginning of last semester. Now he is fully certified to fly in the clouds! I love my job!

Spring break is coming up!!! I’m going to stay in Daytona and catch up on some of my projects and chill at the beach. I hope everyone has a nice and relaxing break. Time to finish up my homework for the evening.

March 8, 2009

Warm weather and sunny skies are what I’m hoping for this coming week. My sister arrives on Thursday and some friends and I are driving to Orlando to pick her up. I can’t wait for her to be here!! My friends and I have made an itinerary of all the things we are going to do while she is here. I’ll make sure to post pictures of all the fun we have!

ROTC has been keeping me even busier because of Operation Bottoms Up (OBU) Week. OBU Week is a week where the 200s take over the wing and plan and execute everything for that week. To be on Wing Staff, you must submit an application packet and go to wing boards—basically an interview by upperclassmen. I submitted an application packet because I thought it would be good leadership experience and the whole packet took me about five hours to complete. The next day they said the boards would be held on Friday. When I found that out, I was torn between a rock and a hard place because I could either stay in Daytona, participate in the boards, or I could go to Georgia with my best friend to see his family. I thought about my decision and decided to go to Georgia. I don’t regret my decision and I still got a good position for OBU. I got OSS/CC which is Operations Support Squadron Commander. My primary job is to plan and execute Lead Lab on Wednesday morning. If anything goes wrong that morning, then it will be on me and my staff. I’m looking forward to next week!

At the beginning of last week, I met with my training officer for my mid-term evaluation. I think it went pretty well and I’m so glad that we have made it through the halfway point. I had to pick up more uniform items in preparation for Field Training. I can’t believe how soon it will be here! The training officers had a supplementary instruction session to give tips for Field Training and I learned some interesting things. When you come to college, go to events that you believe you will gain something from and go to some where you don’t think you will because you might be surprised. I went to Patrick Air Force Base and got my military id last week, so now I have proof that I’m part of the Air Force!

Classes are going well, but I’m a little disappointed in myself because I still haven’t started on my Business Law paper. I’m such a procrastinator! This week I plan to set a goal for myself to get all of my research done. I have two tests this week: Corporate Finance and Organizational Behavior. I did some studying over the weekend and I’m going to study tomorrow night, so I think I’ll do well.

Silver Wings is getting ready for a joint meeting with Arnold Air this week. We are going to discuss NATCON and play some games. I bought my ticket for NATCON last week, so I’m officially going to Phoenix in April. This weekend we had a joint road clean-up and then we all went out to lunch afterwards.

Well, I hope everyone is having a good semester at school and are looking forward to Spring Break. If you haven’t already visited Embry-Riddle, now is a good time to come because the weather is beautiful and you can check it out before you make your final decision. Next journal entry, I will cover Daytona Beach and Embry-Riddle from a newcomer’s perspective.

Until next time,
Kaleigh

February 23rd

Hey everyone!
I believe it is crunch time for all you high school seniors finding out what colleges you are going to! That’s so exciting!!! Let me know if any of you guys I have been talking to get accepted to Riddle!! This weekend is Parents Weekend for the COA families, my parents are not coming but a few of my friends are, so that will be the excitement for the weekend. Also, tonight is the last hockey game of the year, that will be fun, too! Since we don’t have football here the big event seems to be hockey. I am waiting very patiently for Prof. Gallup (Awesome!!! take him!) to put my grade up for the test I took yesterday and it is killing me!!! I also had a math test this morning that seemed fairly easy, and I have a legislation test on Monday that I need to study for. For flight team we are getting our new plane Monday I believe, it is a Technam “Super Echo.” We will use it for our landing events, it is a Light Sport so it should land very nicely! Last week was the Daytona 500, which means the roads are parking lots… and there were tons of drunk people all over the place. Daytona saw its excitement for the year. It is kind of annoying for us though, it takes forever to do the normal activity because of everyone!!! That is about all that is going on in my life right now though. Keep sending those e-mails!!! and facebook me!!!
<3 Elizabeth

February 22nd

Greetings to all! I hope everyone is having a successful and productive year so far! The Daytona 500 is finally over and things have just begun to return to normal. I guess I can’t get too used to it though, because Bike Week starts up next week. I have never seen so many people crammed into one city! We found that it took longer to drive to the Speedway than it did to just walk over. I went to the race on Sunday, and worked security at the Daytona Club for a few hours to earn some community service. The race ended up getting rained out, and it was a soggy mess trying to leave the track. There was four F-15s at Daytona Int’l for the weekend which did the flyover to start the race. You see, I live adjacent to Eglin AFB in northwest Florida so I am used to hearing fighters, especially 15s, buzzing around my house on a regular basis. It was nice to hear the roar of those engines again. They made me feel like I was back home.

Classes are going really well, and I feel like I am managing my time well enough to perform soundly while also having fun and keeping up with my Pike activities. I scored well on all of my tests we’ve taken so I am very pleased about that. Speaking of classes…

* MWF 8:00-9:00 – AT200 – Air Traffic Management I – This class is at eight in the morning! So many days I wake up and seriously contemplate going to this one, especially if I was up until one or two studying. (studying. right…) It usually ends with me in gym shorts and a sweatshirt walking to class in a hurry. We took our first test, in which I scored an 86 on. I’m not satisfied with an 86, so I really hope to do better on the next one. The tests in this class cover six to eight chapters at a time, so with such a large volume of material it’s tough to remember it all. We are finally beginning the real meat of the course, studying Letters of Agreement, Standard Operating Procedures, Fundamentals of Radar, and Airspace.

*MWF 11:45-12:45 – WX301 – Aviation Weather – We took a test in this class last week, and I got an 84 on it. Like AT200, the tests in this class cover quite a vast amount of notes. But the professor said the first test in this class is much harder than the rest of the tests in the semester so the next test should have a higher result. This class also has a lot of homework and labs, which lessens the weight of the tests. Overall I have a 92 so I am just going to concentrate on keeping it up there. It has been a while since I took WX201, so the material takes some time to make sense, but I eventually get it.

*MWF 4:45-5:45 – PS103 – Technical Physics I – Physics is still super easy, which I attribute to excellent preparation by a fantastic teacher I had for physics in high school. We are moving very quickly through the book and the homework in this class can be a killer sometimes. It’s not hard, just very time consuming. The lab portion of this class only meets once a week, which is nice. However, the lab reports are such a pain to type up and understand. In this lab, me and three other students conduct an experiment and then figure out all of the math that makes it work. The guys in my lab group are pretty smart, so that makes the experiments and computations run smoothly.

*TTH 9:45-11:00 – MA112 – College Math for Aviation II – This is probably my favorite class. I love math anyway, but Professor Collins is an absolutely incredible teacher. On our first test, I scored a 92 which I think is acceptable. This class is really a breeze as long as you do the homework and participate in class.

*TTH 11:15-12:30 – BA201 – Principles of Management – One word could describe this class: Boring. I understand that management is necessary, especially for someone like myself who would enjoy the opportunity to one day manage an air traffic facility. I just wish this class wasn’t a woman talking for an ungodly amount of time. I scored a 92 on the first test in here, so that makes my outlook on this class a little brighter. We are currently working on a group project about a company of our choice about how their management is run within the business. We chose Embraer, who is an aircraft manufacturing company. Most regional jets are either made by Embraer or another company by the name of Canadair. (The prefix “ERJ” in some aircraft identifiers stands for “Embraer Regional Jet”).

Pike is keeping really busy lately, but I am making some great friendships and contacts that will stay with me for the rest of my life. Many people say pledging a fraternity is almost like having another class, because of all the work required. I’m beginning to agree with them. There have been several basketball games recently, which are always a blast to attend. It’s great fun to trash talk the other team and complain to the referees about their terrible calls (which always seems to happen). Hockey games are also a blast, except they always seem to fall on freezing cold nights. The rink is several degrees colder than outside due to the ice, so I always freeze by behind off. Also, last week was the date auction. This is where people are auctioned off for dates and all the money raised goes to charity.

In other news, I recently was invited to join the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, which I am very excited about. NSCS is an honor society for only students with a 3.4 or higher cumulative GPA. I am really looking forward to Spring Break so I can see my family and friends from back home again. My best friend Sam is coming down from Ft. Bragg, North Carolina, to spend a few days with me at the beginning of Spring Break. Sam is in the military, so it’s not often I get to see him, let alone spend a few days together. He is shipping out to go to Afghanistan in the beginning of April, so this time will be very special.

Anyway, that’s all for now. I hope everything is well with all you readers out there and don’t forget to shoot me an email if anyone has any questions about Riddle.

Until next time.

February 22, 2009

Hello everyone. I hope you all had a wonderful long Presidents’ Day weekend. I sure did! I decided to take advantage of the long weekend and go up to New York City to visit my girlfriend for Valentine’s Day. What a fun and exciting time! I have actually never been to New York before so I really enjoyed myself. We saw the Statue of Liberty, went to the top of the Empire State Building, walked through Central Park, and ate amazing food. It was a well-deserved vacation.

Now that I’m back to the grindstone, classes have been progressing rather smoothly. Last week was pretty calm; however, the upcoming week is gearing right back up again. I have my first US History test on Monday. I’m really curious about how that one will go. I also have a weather project that will be due in a few weeks. The teacher divided us up into groups of eight. Each group will explain the weather phenomenon that occurs in a certain region and how it affects travel. My group gets the opportunity to research and explain the weather in the Middle East. This project should be pretty interesting. I’ll keep everyone updated as my research progresses.

This weekend is Parent’s Weekend in the College of Aviation. During Parent’s Weekend, the students get the opportunity to give their parents a first-hand look at what it’s like to be a student here at Embry-Riddle. The parents get to experience personal tours, attend classes, and even observe flights. It is truly an exciting time, especially for the current freshmen. I even took my student’s little brother and sister flying with us during our training flight yesterday. The look on the little girl’s face as we took off was priceless. Times like these make me realize how lucky I am to have such a rewarding and exciting career.

I hope everyone has a wonderful February, well, what’s left of it at least. I’m off to a flight instructor get together. Remember; don’t hesitate to email me if you have any questions.
