Hi All,

It’s finally the week of Thanksgiving! Just 11 days or regular class remain and two days of finals. The end is near!

Thankfully, we just have a two days of classes this week which makes it a pretty easy week. Overall, classes have been keeping me pretty busy, but I have also been enjoying some down time in Daytona.

I’m looking forward to heading home Wednesday morning to spend Thanksgiving with my family as well as to see some of my friends. Plus, it will enjoy some R&R before crunch time sets in after Thanksgiving.

Early November Update

Hello There!

It has been a busy few weeks between school, work, and traveling some. I cannot believe that it is already November, and there are just 18 days left of classes! Then, we’ll be on break after just four days of finals.

With so little time left in the semester, things are starting to pick up in my classes; there is just about one test left in each of my classes with most of them occurring before Thanksgiving Break thankfully! Since classes started a week later this Fall compared to last Fall, we have an extra week between Thanksgiving and exams which is awesome! Most of us will be able to actually slow down and enjoy the three days (plus the weekend) we have for Thanksgiving with very little homework to do! Although, it will be a busy two weeks after break.

Last weekend, I went out to Las Vegas to celebrate my birthday! It was a very fun-filled weekend!14947494_1012285355564418_4003512264289366832_n

One of the highlights of the trip was spending several hours in Salt Lake City on an extended layover; it was awesome getting to watch the flights operate that I scheduled transfer through Delta’s hub as well as fly on some of the flights I scheduled too. Also, I had the opportunity to visit with a friend who pretty much has his own Delta Museum in the basement of his house.

Now, gotta get back to the books!

Late-October Update

Hello there!

I cannot believe that there are just five more days left in October! Plus, Thanksgiving break is less than a month away, and there is just about a month-and-a-half left of the Fall 2016 semester remains. So much still left to do and not a whole lot of time left!

I just finished my final mid-terms yesterday, and all went very well. Now, it’s time to begin focusing on some end of semester projects and studying for the remaining tests that are left before Thanksgiving.

October hasn’t felt quite right; Hurricane Matthew and no Industry/Career Expo has thrown the month off. However, the count down to the first ever Spring Industry/Career Expo on March 1st has begun, and we have been pretty busy in the Career Services Office registering employers and working on other details!

Hurricane Matthew and the Industry/Career Expo

Greetings!

14448965_979559538837000_6374416581809021170_n-2October was starting off so well, until Hurricane Matthew decided to visit the Florida coast.

On October 1, I traveled up to Atlanta for the day to visit some of my co-workers at Delta that I worked with during my internship this past summer. It was really nice to re-connect with them and hear about what is going on in Network Planning. Plus, there was an airline collectible show going on at the Delta Flight Museum and ran into some old friends at the event.

 

Update on the Industry/Career Expo

Once returning back to school last week, the Career Services office was quite busy as we were finalizing preparations for the annual Industry/Career Expo that was set to take place that Thursday. However Tuesday morning, it became apparent that Daytona Beach and the rest of the Florida coast would be impacted by Hurricane Matthew.

We had to make the decision to postpone the Industry/Career Expo for the safety of the students and employers coming to campus. I spent most of the day in the office on Tuesday, and I do not think I have ever seen our office that busy!

The office is diligently working to re-schedule the Expo for Spring 2017, and we realize that this is a much anticipated event by students and employers. Over the course of the coming weeks, employers are planning to visit campus to host info sessions and to do some recruiting. Details about company events are being sent out via email and are included in our weekly email that is sent out on Sunday afternoons which students can sign up for through Eagle Hire.

Hurricane Matthew

This was not my first category four hurricane to deal with. A few years ago, I was living in Houston when Hurricane Ike made landfall as a category four storm. We were out of school for three weeks and without power for about two-and-a-half weeks. Thankfully, this storm was no where near like that.14469646_983286198464334_5263984979174363447_n-2

Tuesday morning, I was able to find a cheap ticket to fly back to Houston for a long weekend since it appeared that Hurricane Matthew was planning to make a direct hit to Daytona Beach. Luckily, it was just enough offshore that the damage was not as bad as some were predicting. Regardless, it was still scary and some homes are still without power and need repairs.

Starting Wednesday and into Thursday morning, Embry-Riddle evacuated its aircraft to Auburn. It was so crazy to see the flight line empty while departing Daytona Beach Thursday afternoon!

After an unexpectedly long weekend, classes are resuming today (Tuesday). It is not clear if the three days we had off will impact our semester schedule, but we should find out relatively soon.

October is Quickly Approaching

Hello!

I cannot believe that it is already the end of September!

School is most definitely in full swing; I have my first round of tests starting later this week. Thankfully, I just have two tests, but the pressure is on as my grade in both of those classes is just based on a few tests over the course of the semester. I guess the nice thing is that I very rarely have homework to do, other than to read and study. At the same time, we are beginning to discuss topics for our final paper/project in my upper-level humanities course (Technology and the Modern Civilization).

I am so excited for October to be here. It is my favorite month of the year, but it is also the busiest with school, the Industry/Career Expo, traveling, and turning another year older.

The Career Services Office is busier than ever; students are coming in to get their “fast pass” which is the name badge required to get into the Industry/Career Expo. More than 100 companies and organizations are registered to attend. We just have eight days to go until my favorite day of the Fall semester (other than the last day of finals).

Buckle up, October is going to be a busy month!

First Few Weeks of the Fall 2016 Semester

Hello there!

I’m getting back into the swing of things at school; it has not been too bad of an adjustment going from working all the time to going back to being a student after my summer internship. 14332979_965948856864735_4286756368951495946_n

So far, the Fall 2016 semester is off to a great start! I am taking a lot of fun/interesting courses: Organizational Behavior, Corporate Finance, the Joy of Science, Technology and the Modern Civilization (an upper-level humanities course), and Economics of Air Transportation.

This semester has a bit of a different feel compared to my first semester at Riddle two years ago. My courses this semester require a lot more reading, but they provide a nice way to challenge the way I think. For example in my humanities course, we are analyzing why people post things on social media and how deeply the message is rooted in the medium (the social platform that is being used to send the message…Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter, etc). Since I have a bit of a social background, it has been fascinating have these discussions in class and through our assignments because it is something that I have never thought of.

Team work has also become a lot more frequent; in three out of my five classes this semester, I have completed at least one assignment that required groups, and it is only the end of the third week! However, this is a great way to gain some experience working in a team, and based on the interviews for internships, a question about team work came up in every single one.

The Career Services Office has been very busy! We are getting ready to host the annual Industry/Career Expo on October 6 with 101 different companies attending! I feel like a little kid again waiting for Christmas morning to finally come as October 6 quickly approaches. The week of the Industry/Career Expo is always my favorite because it is a great way to meet and network with alumni, watch other students get interviews for internships and jobs, and see an awesome event come together!

I am also working as a Peer Mentor in a University 101 course this semester; this is a class that freshman take usually their first semester at Embry-Riddle. It’s a fun class that helps prepare you for your time at Riddle. From Academic Study Plans to hearing from different offices on campus to making a resume, the class covers quite a bit. It has been a lot of fun working as a Peer Mentor, and it has reminded my of my freshman year quite a bit and how the last two years at Riddle have been awesome!

It’s going to be a busy semester, but I am fully energized and ready to enjoy it!

Let Fall 2016 Begin

I spent the summer working on the Schedule Integrity team in the Network Planning department at Delta’s headquarters in Atlanta, GA. I was part of the team that was responsible for working on the flight schedule about three months before it was flown; the Schedule Integrity team (SI) is the last team in Network Planning that works on the schedule before it gets turned over to crew scheduling, Delta’s regional airline partners, and the airports Delta serves. Then, it is turned over to the folks in the Operations and Customer Center (OCC) to dispatch and deal with any issues that arise on the day of departure.

Each of the SI members manage a hub, several out stations, a few aircraft types (to ensure maintenance is built into the schedule and for crew scheduling), and works with a regional airline or two (to ensure that they can execute their part of the schedule). My primary focus was on the Cincinnati and Salt Lake City hubs, a regional airline, and helping other team members as needed. Even though everybody has their own beat, we still ended up working together as a team quite a bit when changes to the flight schedule need to be made; for example, a flight might start the day in Salt Lake City then fly several flights and end the night at New York JFK, but if we change the departure time out of Salt Lake City, the days’ flights and ultimately the arrival into JFK might change and impact slots or even ground time for planned maintenance.

Although I was an intern, I am very thankful that the team treated me like a full-time employee which was a great way to get hands-on experience and for me to know that this is what I want to do after graduating college.

Now, it is the first day of classes, and it’s time to get back into my school routine. I do miss working at Delta, but it is nice to return to campus and continue working towards completing my degree.

Summer Has Arrived

Summer has officially arrived, and to say the absolute least, I am very excited! While I do enjoy school, it is nice to enjoy a little R&R and a change of pace.

I only had three final tests this semester, and only one of them was cumulative. With my last final being over at 5PM on Tuesday, May 3, I wasted no time by flying home the following morning.

It was quite nice to spend a week at home with family and friends and just to relax a little; the last three weeks of school were extremely busy between work, final semester tests, finals, and term papers so some R&R was much needed.

All too soon it was time to return back to Florida for less than 72 hours to pack up and drive up to Atlanta to start my internship at Delta this summer! Stay tuned

Finals Are Around The Corner

Less than a week remains of the Spring 2016 semester, and I am counting down the days, hours, and minutes until I get to go home for a week!

Classes:

All of my projects and papers have been turned in, including the dreaded Technical Report for my COM221 class (Technical Writing). The projects and papers were fun to work on, and it helped that most of the projects and papers required teams to work on them which makes them a little less work intensive.

All that all that’s left are three finals! Although two of my “finals” are just regular tests over the last bit of material we covered during the last month of classes, and only one is a cumulative final over all of the material we have covered this semester.

College finals may seem scary, but overall, they are not too bad. Our professors always try to give us some guidance, and in the end, most of the finals are just regular tests.

Work:

Things in Career Service have been quite busy the last few weeks. One cool thing is that students can earn college credit for going out on a Co-Op or internship! Since there are lots of students going out on internships and co-ops, the office is busy as there is a lot of paperwork that is done through our office.

In the Fall, I will continue working as a Student Assistant in Career Services, but I will also work as a Peer Mentor in University 101 for First Year Programs. I am really looking forward to this opportunity!
