How to Handle Homesickness Without Crying in the Shower

Hey y’all!

I hope everyone’s week has been going well! Today I wanted to talk about something almost every college student deals with at some point, even if they don’t admit it: homesickness. Whether you’re only an hour away or you flew across the country for school, that first semester hits hard. Suddenly the comfort of your own bed, your pets, and your mom’s cooking feels very far away.

So here are a few things that helped me get through those moments without dramatically crying in the shower like I’m in a movie scene.

1. Create a “Home Base” in Your Dorm

Your dorm will feel lonely if it looks like a temporary hotel room. Decorating makes a bigger difference than you’d think. Add photos, hang lights, get a cozy blanket, or keep your favorite snack stocked. Little familiar things make your space feel safer and more “you.”

Pro Tip: make your bed comfy.

2. Call Family (But Not Too Often)

Talking to people from home helps but calling every single time you feel sad can make the feeling worse. Find a balance. Schedule one or two calls a week so you can update everyone, get reassurance, and hear your dog bark in the background. But also give yourself room to adjust to your new environment without running back emotionally every five minutes.

3. Get Out of Your Dorm (Seriously)

Homesickness gets worse when you sit alone in a small room staring at the door. Go do something—even if it’s small.
Go study in the library, grab food with a friend, join a club meeting, or take a walk. Movement helps your brain switch out of sad mode.

This is actually how I met a lot of my friends, just by saying yes to little things.

4. Build New Routines

One huge reason why home feels like “home” is because of routine—your favorite breakfast, a certain TV show at night, the same route to school, etc.
Try building new routines on campus. Maybe it’s grabbing a morning coffee, going to the gym at a certain time, or studying in the same spot. Routines help your brain feel grounded, and that’s something homesickness really tries to steal.

5. Give Yourself Grace

Homesickness is NORMAL. Like, painfully normal. You’re not weak. You’re not dramatic. You’re not “failing” at college because you miss home.
You’re human.
This is a huge transition, and emotions don’t care how old you are.

If you need to cry a little? Cry! It doesn’t have to be in the shower, those tears are allowed anywhere.

6. Remember Why You’re Here

When homesickness flares up, focus on your goals. The degree you’re chasing, the dream job, the future you want. This is just the uncomfortable middle part between who you were and who you’re becoming.

Home will always be there. But right now, you’re building a version of yourself that your future self will be proud of.

Homesickness doesn’t last forever, even if it feels like it does in the moment. One day you’ll wake up and realize campus finally feels familiar. That’s when you know you’re growing.

Until next time,

February & First Beach PT of the Semester

Happy February everyone! I’m currently blogging from Daytona Beach, and it’s been very cold and rainy the past two weeks! While other parts of the country are experiencing extreme cold fronts and snow, Florida gets – you guess it… rain! Despite it being very chilly lately I am excited about February. So excited, that I have officially changed my background on my laptop home screen for the second time this month. My go-to selection for background images (that feels almost like making your bed, but digitally) is TheEveryGirl Tech Backgrounds. The little things in life truly make the biggest difference in helping me feel excited and energized throughout my days, no matter how busy.

Additionally, Air Force ROTC had it’s first beach Physical Training (PT) session of the semester! Pre-COVID era, beach PT events were very common, and were my personal favorite as they are a lot of fun! Getting salty, sandy, and sweaty while the sun rises with your Air Force family never gets old. Plus, running on the beach is such a challenge and a great workout!

A particularly stunning beach PT sunrise with Venus visible!

In other news, AFROTC Leadership Laboratories (LLABs) and PT sessions have been going well, and despite the copious amounts of afternoon rain, the sunrises on campus lately have been stunning too!

Sunrise over AFROTC LLAB circa Spring 2022.

In other news, I’ve been keeping up with my new StairMaster routine lately too! I’ve finished watching Luca and have started Happy Feet on Disney+. The Disney animated movies are so happy and adorable, definitely my favorite films to watch when decompressing!

Keeping up with my StairMaster progress at the Eagle Fitness Center!

While I do enjoy cold rainy days every once in a while. I tend to feel more energized and productive when the usual Florida sunshine is vibrant and bright. I hope hot weather comes back soon! Hopefully I will find some free time to go surfing in the upcoming weeks! Will keep you posted, keep on keeping on folks, report back soon!

Work/Life Balance and Little Joys

Happy almost Halloween everyone! I’m currently blogging from Daytona Beach, at the end of Fall Break, and half way through the semester!

I spent my fall break doing entirely too much homework everyday, and sleeping. My break didn’t really seem like a break, but generally, doing your homework is always a better option than not! Until the semester ends there is never a time where I don’t have assignments to do. Thus, it is all the more important to find time for what makes you happy in order to create a sustainable routine and work/life balance. My life tends to be 99% work, but I am looking forward to having more time for rest and fun during Winter Break!

My go-to for finding small happy breaks in my busy days has been centered a lot on finding joy in my routine. Sometimes my workouts are too similar and I get bored with the same monotonous schedule that is school, studying, working, etc. Don’t get me wrong, college is extremely challenging and I am never at a loss for things to do. I am practically swimming in homework, papers, projects, and presentation assignments, on top of meetings, and ROTC obligations, but I’ve reached a point where the busy-ness isn’t exactly new or exciting. There’s always new assignments, but even they fall into a rhythm of similar challenges and stresses. Lately I’ve been thinking how interesting it is that despite everything new, such as different classes, new people in group projects, new friends, the flow of school is the same.

Something I’ve focused more on this semester is making time for things that make me happy on the day to day, even when I’m busy. For me, this looks like painting my nails every few weeks because it makes me feel more put together during the busy days.

This week’s nail color of choice!

Small joys of everyday life also looks like trying new tea flavors when I’m studying, lately in the evenings I’m liking Peppermint and Chamomile! I’ve also been enjoying FaceTiming my mom once a week, texting my sister, my family, and my friends who I don’t see everyday more, and Peppermint Hot Chocolate mix. This also includes new plants! Recently I was in charge of organizing a team builder during our RA staff meetings, so we planted little cups of basil and cilantro, mine just began sprouting!

My new basil plant babies!

When I’m stressed I also tend to focus on everything that I need to do, rather than everything I’ve done, it’s SO important to recognize yourself for all the hard work you do! I’ve been trying to do face masks a few evenings every week to decompress before I go to sleep, and help my skin stay hydrated, which always helps me wake up feeling more refreshed and happy – even on the early PT mornings.

A BIG event that I am very excited for is graduation and commissioning in spring, but it’s easy sometimes to lose sight of the shining end goals when you’re in the middle of a sea of work. Keep your goals in mind constantly, and let them help motivate you when the routine gets boring. Trying new snacks or drinks helps spice up everyday life, and new music, workout routines, and self care that you wouldn’t regularly do is so much fun too! Keep on keeping on folks, will report back soon.
