Hey again, readers! I’ve gotta admit all I can think about right now is going home for Thanksgiving. I was originally going to be staying here until we got out for Christmas break, but now I get to leave as early as the 20th, so a week from today I’ll be back on the West Coast. Yay! Since I’m leaving early I’m going to be missing three days of school, which is kind of going to screw me over, but I’ll just have to study hard when I get back. One of those three days that I’m missing is going to be for the base visit, which I decided to do. I’ll update on that more after it actually happens, but that should be fun. I think that’ll probably be the most traveling I’ve ever done in one weekend: Daytona to Charleston/Shaw to Dayton, OH to Charleston/Shaw to Daytona, THEN to Orlando (and briefly Atlanta) then Seattle. So I’ll say I’m just pretty stoked in general. Sadly, I think I’m probably more excited about flying and transferringplanes and stuff in the airport than I am about actually being home. It’s going to be fun though, I’m excited to see some of my old friends and go to familiar places.

When I was getting ready to come here, I remember thinking it would be kind of a relief not having a lot of girls around because guys are generally a lot easier to get along with. Now, that I’m here though, there’s a lot of stuff that I really miss doing with girls, like getting pedicures and getting your hair done and all that. Guys suck at gossiping, too, sorry. NICE gossip, though šŸ˜‰ Girls can be pretty mean to each other, so that makes it a little intimidating to try to strike up a friendship with a girl you’ve never seen before.

In other news, classes are about the same as usual. I’m not doin’ too great or anything, but I usually manage to pull everything up before the end of the semester. The weird thing is, this last week, I felt like I totally got electricity, and ended up doing pretty bad on that test. Then in my regs class (FAA regulations and all that good stuff) I hadn’t been paying any attention at all and had basically given up even passing that class ’cause I just thought there was absolutely no way I could flat out memorize everything right before class when I’d been basically sleeping with my eyes open throughout the period since we started that unit. Well by the grace of God, I didn’t do that bad at all. In fact, I did a lot better than some people who thought they knew everything way better than me. So I think I witnessed a miracle this week.

ROTC’s pretty great as usual. A lot of times I wish it was more intense, but whatever, I’m not complaining. Tomorrow morning all cadets, whether or not you’re usually morning or afternoon lead lab, have it at 5:30 AM. We’re supposedly doing some parade thing, but no one I’ve talked to really seems to get why, since only the crazy people will be up that early.

That’s all for now, email me if you have any questions (kenyonj@erau.edu) , and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can. Alright, peace out, guys!

Hi Everyone!
The semester is going by so fast that I just can’t believe it! My flight home is already just a month away! I can’t wait to see my family and friends and especially Doug. I’ve been getting really homesick lately, but I found that the best cure for being homesick is to do something fun. My roommate, Marjory, and I like to go to Olive Garden for lunch once in a while and to the mall just to be girly. We live in a man’s world down here with so many guys on campus. Oh! That reminds me! Marjory and I are going to be official members of the Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority on Monday. (That’s when the new member’s ceremony is). I never thought I wanted to be in a sorority until I went to the Tri-Sigma ice-cream social and I had a blast! They made my laugh so hard and I love hanging out with just girls for a change too.

My classes are going really well. I don’t know what my current grade is in most of my classes, but I’m sure I have an A or a B for all of them. Chemistry is still my hardest class, but at least I’ve learned a ton in that class.

Well, I think I will be staying here for Thanksgiving break so I can study for finals. I wish I could go home but it’s not worth the time and money for such a short break, especially when I am coming home only two weeks after Thanksgiving. But, I’m really looking forward to five days of no class. Marjory is staying over Thanksgiving too, so I think we will find some fun things to do. I hope the weather will be nice so we can head to the beach and go home tan!

Have a Great Day!

November 17, 2005

Hey, guys!! I hope all of my readers have had a great past two weeks. These past two weeks have been extremely busy for me. So busy, in fact, that I lost track of time. So, I’m sorry this entry is a bit late.

Last night, I had my first experience scheduling for classes. It is NOT easy.. some classes are closed, some aren’t offered for the spring semester, prerequisites aren’t always met.. it’s a mess. But, needless to say, I’m currently registered for 9 credit hours worth of class for the next semester. I’m taking AT 300 (air traffic control), COM 219 (speech), and WX 201 (Meteorology 1). A few things have changed since I last updated. I audited my Calculus 1 class. So, now I have to re-take pre-calc and calc. However, I changed my area of concentration from research to media. So, I no longer have to take math at the engineering level. I’m also going to minor in ATC. I hear it’s a great fall-back.

As far as my other classes are coming along, things are going pretty well. I’m definitely struggling through IT 109.. I do not like Access. And I don’t know the members of my group for my PowerPoint project. My grade is definitely dropping in there. My AS 120 grade is on the rise, though. And hopefully I can pull through this IT 109 class.

Tonight, I’m leaving for OH. But I’ll be back, this weekend. Already, I can’t wait to be back.. I don’t know how things in OH are gonna turn out. I miss everyone, but I love the girls, here. Bridget, one of the AZD alumni, is driving me up. I’m hoping to fly back on Friday!! We’ll see how that goes.

I’ve been really busy with the sorority, lately. We’ve had so much going on because initiation was scheduled for this Friday. However, it’s been rescheduled for Dec. 3 due to my trip home. Thank you SoOo much girls for holding off. I owe you all SoOo much.

Right now, I’m about to head over to Kelly’s room in O’Conner. We’re going to get a banner made for the AZD Holiday Dinner. Then, I’m coming back to get a shower and pack for the trip home. I’m not bringing much, if anything. We have a family dinner for the sorority at 5. Then, we’re going to take a nap before Bridget and I drive up. I should be home sometime tomorrow evening!!

I have so much more that I’d like to share with all of you, including pictures from formals. So, I’ll see what I can do about posting an extra entry over Thanksgiving Break or sometime when I’m less busy!! Hope ya’ll have a great Turkey Day šŸ™‚

Hey Everyone!
Wow, the past two weeks have seen this campus abuzz with so much excitement. If there would be a theme for this entry, it would be activism. Activism can be so many things, but what it comes down to is that in order to accomplish your goals in life for yourself and for any group you may be part of is that you have to do something about it. Sitting around, gets absolutely nothing done. Get out, be active and let yourself be heard.

The reason I bring this up is because the past month has seen an issue develop on the campuses of Embry-Riddle. Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s long term decisions are made by its Board of Trustees, which since the 1960s, has a student representative from each residential campus and a faculty representative from all three campuses. The BOT was recently given recommendations from an independent consultant to remove these votes and a committee proposed new bylaws without these representatives included. This caused much distress on campus, because no one wants to lose their representation on a board that makes decisions about them. Students banded together positively, organizing a massive campaign to let the BOT know that we do care about the long term future of the school and want to keep it a great school for the people who are here now, to the people reading this journal and also the people who will dream of attending Embry-Riddle twenty years from now.

This campaign included a mass petition which received almost 2,000 signatures and an all day rally which saw 1,600 students over the course of the day, of which some pictures are posted below.

The rally and the whole campaign were successful to a degree. This past Friday, the BOT voted to push back the vote on the new bylaws to the spring, citing more time needed to make such a decision.

On another SGA front, Task Force One is coming really well. Rockin’ the Holidays has hit a bunch of stumbling blocks, but these obstacles are teaching us how things work in the Student Government Association. Hopefully we can overcome these obstacles and put a good show. We are really working hard at this and we hope to become closer to the SGA in our relationships with the Student Representative Board, the Student Finance Board, and the Student Court. If you are at all interested in student government, next year Task Force one will be the place for you. You will be finding out much more about TFO in the months to come. This is what a TFO meeting might look like, just with less people than you should have next year (hopefully!)

On the school side of things, I have a LOT of work to do. Professors went project happy the last two weeks and I’ll be working until I leave Daytona on this Friday for home (yay!) and while I am home. Although I did know of these projects because I received a syllabus, you can’t really do the projects until you learn some skills in the class so you can’t really do them until the end of the semester. It’s a real catch-22 situation.

This past Friday I did absolutely the coolest thing of college so far. I attended the National Business Aviation Association 2005 convention in Orlando and had a blast. It was reported that approximately 30,000 people attended this convention centered around corporate aviation. Quite a few ERAU students attended and there was even an Embry-Riddle alumni booth. I saw a lot of new planes, met a lot of people that work for industries you take for granted and don’t realize their services are necessary for a plane to work, or look really nice. These kinds of things are important because networking is an important part of college, especially at a school like this. Once again, I’ve added some pictures from NBAA. The picture of me on the fake horse was just one of the many fun things that were at each booth.

So it’s time to bring this to a close. We have learned some things today, like get involved and do things that make you happy, but I think the prevalent piece of information is that I really like pictures. On that note, here’s one more of the people on my floor at our trip to Wing House, a restaurant here in Daytona Beach.

November 3, 2005

These past two weeks have been some of the busiest most fun times I have had in Daytona yet. We just had homecoming and it was so much fun. My Fraternity built a float on the back of a Ryder trailer and we made it into a pirate ship. The theme of the homecoming parade was “Once Upon a Time,” so we did Pinocchio. For some reason we all dressed up as pirates and had one person wear a long nose to represent Pinocchio, but it was a lot of fun.. When our float went under the walkway near the student village, our mast on the pirate ship hit and snapped in half, it was really funny and the crowd was very amused, but duck-tape did the job to get it back up. We didn’t win any awards for our float because some of the other organizations went through extremes in decorating, but the surf club won the best on-campus sign.

Besides the parade, the Touch and Go production team hired Carlos Mencia to do a show one of the nights and he was really good. He is the comedian with his own show on Comedy Central “Mind of Mencia.” This past week was also Sky Fest and Alumni weekend for my Fraternity besides the entire school. We had a big BBQ right along the airport and watched all of the aerobatics and fighter jets perform their shows right above our heads. They even had a jet engine mac truck rip down the runway. My favorite part of the show would have to be the A-10 doing low fly-bys simulating air-to-ground bombings with actual pyrotechnics and fire. It gave me the chills every time the A-10 would fly over because I am sure it has been the last thing many people have seen who fight against the US. After the BBQ that night, everyone got together and we all partied ³responsibly² with the Alumni. Pledging is still “going,” but there is only 2 more weeks I have to make it through until I am done.

As far as academics are going, I just survived my second series of major exams which all happened in to be in the same week again. I did really well on every one of them and am really getting motivated to keep up the good work. Going to class ever day is becoming a bit of a challenge now, but since I am doing this good so far why waste my previous effort by being lazy? In my ATC classes we are going over a lot of familiar stuff to me since I am already a pilot, but reviewing sectionals and basic navigation could never hurt. I am so excited to be going to Embry-Riddle for ATC, I just finished scheduling my classes for next semester and the ATC ones look like so much fun.

That’s is it for this entry. Keep the questions coming those of you who have been sending me them. Until next time work hard and stay out of trouble.

November 3, 2005

Hi Everyone!

Wow! So many things have been going on around here lately. On Monday classes were cancelled because of Hurricane Wilma, (which was so much fun!!), and so we only had three days of class this week. (We got Friday off because of homecoming.) My roommate and I were asked to have our room on the list for tours during open house, which meant we had to clean it and ā€œdisappearā€ for the day. So, we went shopping at the Volusia County Mall, and out to lunch at the Olive Garden. It was so much fun because I haven’t been shopping at a mall in months! Sometimes I feel like I live in a man’s world with the ratio of guys to girls being like 7 to 1, and I needed to get away and do something girly for a change.

This week was also the career expo at the IC center gym. It’s mostly for upperclassmen who are looking for jobs after graduation, but my EP 101 class went to make some connections and find out about internships and co-ops. I found out about many opportunities available to me, but only a few really interested me. I think I was most excited about an internship with the United Space Alliance, and a co-op opportunity as a counselor for Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama. Since I transferred in credits, I’m really not that far away from being eligible to apply for them. This made me really excited but also a little worried because I have so many other things I want to do before I graduate and I really want to fit it all in.

Next week I will be registering for my classes for next semester. I can’t guarantee I will get all the classes and times that I want, but so far it looks like I will be taking Physics, Physics for Engineers Lab, Calculus II, Machine Shop Laboratory, Introduction to Computing for Engineers, and Engineering Drawing.

Monday, (Halloween), we are going to have little kids coming to trick-or-treat in the residence halls and I can’t wait for it! They will be so cute in all their costumes!

Happy Halloween!

Hey Everyone,

Studying. That describes the last two weeks to every degree. I have been learning and studying like crazy for all my classes. I still have two tests this week. Tests in college are a lot different than high school, because even though the textbooks have units and chapters, professors assign the weirdest combination of chapters for a test. So you can be learning about the industrial revolution on one hand and India and the Middle East, its traditions, culture and history on the other. It’s weird but I have adapted as much as I can. School for me, has been much better than high school. I like learning specific things that will be helpful to me in a career. Sitting in classroom is fun for me.

Continuing on the academic side of things, I registered for my spring semester of classes! It was really great because since I am the treasurer of Task Force One, which is sponsored by the Student Government Association, I was allowed to pre-register for classes.. This allowed me to get all the classes I wanted before they filled up for the semester. I was really happy because my schedule is a lot like this semester, whereas my classes are in the morning and I have all afternoon to relax. I am taking 5 classes next semester, down from 6 this semester, but one of my classes this semester is 1 credit hour, which means the workload isn’t as extensive as my other classes, which are 3 credit hours. Next semester will be tough, I won’t lie, because I will have macroeconomics, managerial accounting, advanced computing, business statistics, and principles of aeronautical science. So there will be lots of work in my room next semester.

Well, I mentioned Task Force One, and I will give you the first public announcement of our fall event! On Friday, December 2, 2005, Task Force One presents… Rockin’ The Holidays! Now, I don’t expect you guys at home to come, but for the people already on campus who read my journal, there will be food and a concert, with a great local band, that I will name in my next journal entry (they have not yet been confirmed, but soon… definitely.) So come on out, though it made be geared toward first year students, everyone is more than welcome! We will have this, rain or shine! (In case of rain, it will be moved indoors.)

Speaking of rain… last week we had quite a lot. Hurricane Wilma blew over Florida, and we Riddle students waited and waited all weekend for the administration to give us the news that we all wanted to hear. Sunday came and passed, and then at 7 am Monday morning I was rudely awoken by some news I normally never hear until winter. Classes canceled. Yay! What a relaxing day Monday was. Of course now that I am in Florida, I’ll never get a snow day so one hurricane day felt good.

The week was also shortened on the other end because Friday was university day, which kicked off homecoming weekend ’05. The highlight of the weekend for myself was seeing the host of ā€œMind Of Menciaā€ on Comedy Central, Carlos Mencia perform live in the ICI center. He was hilarious. I loved his ability to teach and entertain at the same time. He also signed autographs for any person who wanted one after the show, so when I met him, he was really nice. He really earned the respect of many people, young and older and I really appreciated him coming to Embry-Riddle.

Well, I’m sure you’re pretty excited about high school years and your college years to come and I hope that my journals have given you something to look forward to, should you arrive in Daytona Beach one August or January afternoon.

With Hope for You,
Carlos

P.S. The young man from Spruce Creek High School, who emailed me, please email me back because I mistakenly deleted your email. Thanks.

Sup Guys?
I went home this weekend (27th-30th) ! I was excited and thrilled. I spent a lot of time with my family and my dog. I had two exams this past week that I got over with, which relieved me and I got home without worrying about any kinds of exams.

My exam on Wednesday was in Psychology, I studied for the test for about 3 hours on and off. So about 2 straight I¹d say. I did well, the last one I didn’t do so well so I HAD to do well on this one so I can pull at least a B. It’s not that easy because he covers many chapters on one exam plus you have to memorize much other stuff, that’s why it is PSYCHOLOGY. The other one was right the next day, which killed me. And Guess what it was? The subject I hate, Chemistry!! It was tough again. We got into a study group and studied for 5 hours straight!! Now that was the first time I actually studied Straight for five hours. I felt exhausted after that and went to bed right away; this was Wednesday night after the Psychology exam. In Chemistry, there are so many formulas you have to remember, plus the right equations to solve it and to balance its a pain! My other classes I am improving quite well, but slow. I usually start bad but then regain control because I get used to the system. My first tests I didn’t do too well as I mentioned on my last journals so I am catching up now.

The weather has be fantastic here! I am so surprised it feels like Europe. It is around 50-60 during the night and about 65 during the day. It is just phenomenal and I love it, I go outside just for a walk nightly, that’s how much I love the cold. Some students study outside because its so nice, but then you have other distractions such as the wind blowing all your papers off or a friend calling your name. The best thing is library, it is quite and peaceful, where nobody will distract you. But If I see you, I will. Just kidding!

Now since everybody will probably write that school was cancelled that day because of Hurricane Wilma, we were quite surprised. The reason behind that was because we are a private school and they do not close if other schools or post offices close. It is up to the Chancellor to close the school. The night it increased to a Category 3 Hurricane, it was still open which surprised me, it said we will get winds exceeding 30MPH. Then when I woke up in the morning around 6 I checked and it was terrible outside, school was still open. There was no way I could have gone outside, even with an umbrella it would have blown it away. So I decided not to go to class until things calmed down, which they did six hours later. But by then all my classes were gone and classes were cancelled within an hour, at 7 am.

So here I am on a Sunday night writing this, tomorrow I have a lab at 7:50.. I have to get up at 7 which is not too bad compared to High School. Then I got classes at 8:15, 9:45 and 1:00. I get with my friends to eat lunch at 11:30 always and we have a good time. My best friend here from Croatia won the National Championships in Tennis and is going to Ohio State University on Wednesday to play for higher NCAA II Tennis. If he wins, he can get some kind of entry into U.S. Open or things like that. Amazing player he is. You can view him by looking at the tennis section of our athletics. http://daytona.embryriddlesports.com/ Ok Guys, Cya remember my AIM: Mafia6663

November 3, 2005

What’s happenin’, readers? My legs hurt so bad right now! I just got back from about 10 hours of volunteering for ROTC at the air show.I worked as a cashier at my booth, where we were selling hot dogs to raise money for Air Force. It got kinda crazy at times, but I stayed busy and even got to use my French skills šŸ™‚ The show itself was pretty cool, and there are still planes roaring overhead as we speak. One of the perks of being at Riddle is that you’re right next to the airport so you don’t even have to leave your dorm sometimes to see this stuff.

Last Monday we had a hurricane day. I know I was always way stoked when we had a snow day up in Washington, which wasn’t often, but I thought it was pretty sweet telling my friends back home I got the day off because a hurricane was passing over. Except for a lot of rain, it really wasn’t that bad. It did, however, drop to about 66 degrees during the day, which combined with wind chilland the fact that we’re used to the weather being about 20 degrees higher, it was fairly brutal. In my maintenance classes, we were expecting we’d have to make up that missed day on Friday, which was University Day i.e. no school, but the FAA cut us some slack and let us slide, so we everyone got a three-day weekend and all was well.

So, time management. It’s gotten better I have to say. I’ve spent some time working on my foreign languages, which was fun, and I haven’t forgotten as much as I thought I would have, luckily. I also got to read more, but I’m still not too far in my book. I still should probably study some more though. I realized I study a lot better and am a lot more productive when I work alone in the library, so that’s what I’ll plan on doing from now on.

Yesterday, Carlos Mencia came to Riddle, for those of you who know your comedy. I didn’t go because I was having homemade lasagna (very good, very good). Cake and ice cream, too. From what I hear from everyone that went, he was hilarious.

Other than all that, everything’s been going pretty great these past two weeks. I’ve met so many new people, it’s great. For some reason, it feels like you meet people so much faster in college than you do in high school. So that’s been cool, making a bunch of new friends from different places. I’ve also relearned to appreciate my freedom here a lot more, so I just did a lot more stuff that I wouldn’t have done earlier in my experience in Daytona so far. Life’s pretty good. One more little piece of advice, for college or in general: if you ever feel like you are being forced to give up something you value in your life, take a step back a reevaluate what’s really more important to you, because chances are, anything that makes you give up what you love is something you would be much better off without.

Don’t be shy with your questions, a lot of you have already sent me really good questions, so just keep on asking away! (If it takes me a couple days to get back to you, don’t worry, I haven’t forgotten about you, I’m just really busy, plus I don’t have my own computer, so I just might not have access at the time.) So, kenyonj@erau.edu

Later!

November 3, 2005

Hey, guys!! Long time, no speak.. or so it seems :o) This past week, fortunately, has been AMAZING!! Let’s recap.

On Monday, we had no school due to HuRrRiCaNe WiLMa!! So, I went to the beach with my friends Beth and Marcus. Then, we went back to Marcus’ house and ate breakfast. Around 5:15, I get a phone call from a random guy named Phillip who is a member of the AHP frat. He said to be in my room between 6 and 7. So, you’d better believe I was there. At about 6:05, there’s a knock on my door. I open it to find five pledges with TONS of presents from my BIG sister. For those of you who aren’t so familiar with Greek life, a big sister is someone in the sorority who has more experience. Big/Lil week is when we, the lil, are showered with presents.

Anyway, I’m really excited for the remainder of that day. So, I go to sleep and wake-up for class on Tuesday. I have three classes, but nothing due. It was one of those show up and look pretty days. Then, that night, I have a meteorology club meeting. They had a local meteorologist come in and talk to us about his career. Then, afterwards, the president of the meteorology honors society got up to speak. After he’s done with his talk, he calls me to the front of the room. In front of EVERYONE, he gives me my BIG sister present. It was awesome!! After the meeting, my friend Rachel and I go with Marcus to the store to get some Halloween costumes. Then, we call it a night.

Wednesday was awesome, too. We went to the CaReeR eXPo with University 101. So, class got out earlier than expected. Not feeling so well, I go to bed around 8. At about 11, I hear this pounding on the door. My big sister sent our Xi Man from last year (that’s what we call our sorority’s sweetheart) to deliver me some presents. It was so cute!! I was so excited. She baked me a cake that said: I love my lil Maria.. is that not the cutest thing you’ve EVER heard?! After this, I’m feeling slightly better. So, I eat some of the cake with some friends and go to bed, again.

Thursday morning, I wake up pretty excited because it’s the last day of classes for the week. It was homecoming weekend!! So, I make it through the day. Then, I start getting ready for the first Halloween party of my life. I never used to celebrate this occasion. While I’m getting ready, I get a phone call from a guy named Paul. He’s in the Pike frat. So, no less than 10 minutes later, he shows up at my door with a TON of presents from my BIG sister. I’m so excited, too, because the men she sends me get cuter and cuter each day. Later on, I go to the Pike party with some of the sisters and pledges. We have a great night and close down Cancun Lagoon. I have pictures.. at the end!!

On Friday, I have to wake up to go shopping around 9. Then, I start making a shirt that has to be done by 1 for the parade. When I get it on without ruining the paint job, I grab some food with the girls at Propellers. It was great.. I love hamburgers!! Then, we head over and work on the float until the parade starts at 3. Before the parade starts, an SAE brother came over and said his pledges were going to sing to me. They sang the sweetest song about how I’m a rose or a violet or something. Then, they gave me tons of presents!! After the parade, we go back to take a nap until the basketball game. Two of our sisters were up for HoMeCoMiNG QueeN, but didn’t quite make it. I was bummed, but such is life. After the game, we got ready for the Sigma Chi party. It was a GREAT time. I’m not one for partying.. I don’t drink. I just love people!!

On Saturday, I get to sleep in. I’m very happy about this, too. Went to see Carlos Mencia at the ICI around 8. He was HILARIOUS. Never seen his show, but will be watching it, now. After that, I hung out with my friend Derek. We watched a movie and fell asleep. I was all partied out.

Sunday, was fun. I went to a BBQ for my sorority at Ponce Inlet. I saw dolphins swimming SoOo close you could almost touch them!! It was fantastic. Then, we had our new member meeting. After that, I called a Pike brother to ask for some help with Calculus 1. Now, I’m writing this.

I had a great weekend. This week shouldn’t be horrible, but I have a bit of homework due. So, I’ll be a little stressed. I have some pictures, now. Hope ya’ll enjoy them. If you ever have any questions, feel free to e-mail me: olivab46@erau.edu
